Regenerative Converter Power Supply – MITSUBISHI MDS-B-CVE-185

The MDS-B-CVE-185 is a regenerative converter power supply (“Regenerative Converter Power Supply”) manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric, the central power unit of the MDS-B drive system for CNC machining centres and lathes. The unit converts three-phase mains voltage to a DC bus voltage, cascading power to the connected axis drive units (MDS-B-V) and spindle drive units (MDS-B-SP) on the same bus. The designation CVE identifies the converter function with regenerative energy recovery; the number 185 denotes the rated DC bus current in Amperes. The unit is documented in control architectures based on the Mitsubishi M64, M700 and C70 CNC controllers. No hardware revisions or standard included accessories are known.

The regenerative converter power supply is the primary power unit of the entire drive system: without it, no axis or spindle can receive power, bringing the machine to a complete standstill. The regenerative function also returns the kinetic energy accumulated during deceleration back to the mains, reducing peak current draw and protecting the DC bus from dangerous overvoltages.
