The FR-SF-2-18.5K is an AC spindle drive (“AC Spindle Drive”) rated at 18.5 kW, 200 V class, manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric in the FR-SF series (FREQROL-SF). Designed specifically for AC spindle motor control in CNC machine tools — machining centres, CNC lathes, milling machines — it handles spindle speed and torque regulation over a wide speed range with high precision. The unit is compatible with Mitsubishi MELDAS CNC systems and third-party controllers via analogue (±10 V) and serial interfaces; it also supports spindle orientation for automatic tool changes and drilling cycles.
The spindle drive converts fixed-frequency three-phase mains power into variable voltage and frequency to drive the spindle motor at the speed commanded by the CNC: it interprets the analogue or digital speed reference and maintains stable, precise rotation under varying cutting loads. If the unit fails, the spindle stops or loses speed control, making any cutting operation impossible and risking damage to the workpiece or the machine itself.
