Brushless Servo Drive – OKUMA BL-D50A

The BL-D50A is a brushless AC servo drive (“Brushless Servo Drive”) manufactured by OKUMA, a key component of the axis control architecture in OKUMA CNC machining centres and turning centres. The designation “BL” indicates compatibility with brushless AC servo motors, “D” denotes the drive function, and “50A” identifies the rated output current of the unit. The module manages the current, speed and position control loops in tight integration with the proprietary OSP (Open System Platform) CNC controller by OKUMA. Multiple hardware revisions may exist; the unit interfaces with the controller via a proprietary OSP bus and with the motor via dedicated connectors and optical encoder cable.

The servo drive is the electronic power regulator that converts position and speed references from the CNC into control current for the brushless servo motor: it closes the current and speed loops in real time, guaranteeing torque and kinematic precision of the axis. A failure of the BL-D50A immediately stops the axis it serves, triggering a drive alarm and causing complete machine downtime with no possibility of resuming machining until the unit is replaced or repaired by a specialist.

It is one of the few manufacturers in the world to design and build both the CNC machine tools and the numerical control system (OSP) in-house, ensuring full hardware-software integration.
